What is the difference between Cairns 1010 and 1044?
This helmet is the sister to the familiar Cairns 1010 helmet. Some differences include the paint finish on the 1044 is a matte finish rather than the glossy and shiny finish like that of the 1010. The 1044 comes with a five year shell replacement guarantee and is NFPA 1971-2007 compliant.
What is Cairns G5A?
Since 1836, Cairns & Brother has been the original manufacturer of leather firefighting helmets. With a lower dome and longer rear brim than today’s leather firefighting helmets, the G5A is like the helmet your father wore. Not recommended for firefighting! This helmet is not OSHA or NFPA compliant.
What is a Bronx Bend?
A Bronx bend is the style of a leather fire helmet when the brim is bent nearly straight down at the back to offer maximum protection to the back of the wearer’s neck.
What’s the difference between N5A and N6A?
The difference is that the N6A has a triple layer impact cap and is NFPA 1971-2007 certified. The N5A has a double layer impact cap and is OSHA 1977 certified. This makes the Sam Houston a bit heavier than the New Yorker. Do the newer medium N6As have a taller profile?
Why are fireman hats so big?
The reinforced “dome” is meant to ensure that if something falls on a firefighter’s head that it doesn’t injure the firefighter. The shield can be used for breaking windows. The neck is protected and if you reverse the helmet and point your chin down, the helmet can protect a firefighter’s face too.
Is the N5A New Yorker NFPA compliant?
Both the MSA Cairns N5A New Yorker (OSHA compliant) and the N6A Houston (NFPA 1971 compliant) are now available with a Bronx Bend (large and medium sizes).
How should a fire helmet fit?
Your helmet should fit low and evenly with a good center of gravity and enough height so that your helmet isn’t rubbing the tops of your ears. When you are able to put a little bit of time on the job and given that you have a neck thicker than a pencil, you should barely notice it on your head.
