In a meta-analysis of 19 studies with almost 20,000 people, high TMAO levels were associated with increased rates of cardiovascular diseases, such as heart failure and stroke.
Is there a relationship between TMAO and colon cancer?
In 138 people, those with colon cancer had higher TMAO levels. Elevated TMAO levels also predicted lower disease-free survival among colon cancer patients [ 30 ]. However, in another study on almost 1,300 men, only elevated choline but not TMAO was associated with an increased risk of colon cancer [ 31 ].
