This group of girls was called AKB48 SEED. The term was dropped later on and changed to Kenkyuusei Members (Research Students). After more auditions were held and eventually more generations were created, the Kenkyuusei started to perform by themselves in the theater on their own stage.

When did SKE48 release its first single?
In March 2010, SKE48 released its first single on CROWN GOLD. The single featured a 7 person Senbatsu. Also in March, 1st generation members Mori Sayuki and Shinkai Rina were demoted to Kenkyuusei, amd eventually to graduated in May 2010.

SKE48 has had 175 original members over 10 generations (not including Draft, Kennin and transferred members) and a total of 198 members (Plus Draft, Kennin and transferred members). As of January 2021, SKE48 currently has 61 members and 9 Kenkyuusei .
Who is SKE48 Kenkyuusei from Team KII?
In December 2009, Maeda Eiko from Team KII transferred to the newly debuted sister group, SDN48 for idols who are above 18 years old. Also in this time, Yamashita Moe graduated from the group to become a graphic artist. In February 2010, SKE48 Kenkyuusei began performing regularly in the theater.
