How did lakeside get its name?
This name appears on maps as early as 1800. Here hundreds of head of cattle and sheep grazed, and in the low hills on the east side of the valley (Lakeside) large numbers of swine were raised.

It was built on the site of a former chalk quarry. It was the first out-of-town shopping centre in Essex. It is made up of around 2m sq ft of shopping space. There was a documentary/fly-on-the-wall-style TV show made about Lakeside in 1998, called Lakesiders.
