- Step 1: Visit the National Personnel Records Center official website.
- Step 2: Download and print a copy of the SF-180.
- Step 3: Fill out the form SF-180.
- Step 4: Mail the form SF-180 to the National Personnel Records Center. (
Are military service records public?
The National Archives also holds other records relating to military service, including courts-martial, civilian service, munitions workers and soldier settlement. Records in the National Archives are available to the public if the records are more than 20 years old, called ‘the open period’. Many are available online.
Who is considered a military person in California?
Any nonresident owner of a vehicle registered in a foreign state and a member of the U.S. armed forces or spouse of a member of the U.S. armed forces on active duty within this state. Any person on continuous active duty in the Air Force, Army, Navy, Marines or Coast Guard is considered military personnel.
Can you operate a commercial vehicle in California if on active duty?
If you are on active duty you may operate a commercial vehicle owned by you without obtaining California registration provided the vehicle has valid registration in your home state or the state of military assignment at the time of registration, and is not used in a trade or business.
Do you become a California resident if you leave the military?
If you come to California because of permanent change of station (PCS) orders, you do not become a resident. Generally, you are a resident of the state from which you entered the military. Your domicile is the one place: If you leave California under a TDY, you will continue to be a California resident.
Can you leave California while on sea duty?
If you leave California under a TDY, you will continue to be a California resident. If your home port is in California, you remain a resident while on sea duty, regardless of the ship’s location.
