What happens if your stimulus check was sent back to the IRS?
Your check may have bounced back to the IRS if the agency tried to send your payment to a now-closed bank account or to a temporary prepaid debit card a tax preparer set up for you. If your payment was returned to the IRS, the agency will mail your check to the current address it has on file for you.
What happens if I deposit my tax refund into the wrong account?
In most cases, a bank account will reject a direct deposit that doesn’t match the name on the account. In that case, the money could be sent back to the IRS and you’d likely be issued a refund in the form of a paper check.
What to do if your tax refund is missing a digit?
You can, however, correct the mistake and collect your refund in one of two ways. If the account number you gave the IRS is missing a digit, it will fail to pass a simple validation check with the bureau. If this is the case, contact the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 to let them know you accidentally omitted a number from your account number.

What happens if I omit a digit on my tax return?
You omit a digit in the account or routing number of an account and the number doesn’t pass the IRS’s validation check. In this case, the IRS will send you a paper check for the entire refund instead of a direct deposit.
