Unless you are wholly self-employed, unemployed or receive the state pension only, you will have a tax code which is issued by HMRC. However, because tax codes can change throughout a tax year due to changes in employment or personal circumstances, millions of tax code errors occur each year.
Will my tax code change if I work part time?
Employees who move to part time hours with the same employer should not need to take any action provided their Pay As You Earn (PAYE) Code is correct, as the system should automatically recalculate the tax throughout the year.

What should my tax code be if I have never worked?
I’ve never worked but will be starting soon. If you’ve just left education and are going into your first job, you should be put on the tax code that reflects your earnings and position. For example, if you qualify for a basic personal allowance of £12,500, you should be put on the standard tax code of 1250L.
When to tell your employer your tax code?
It is most important that you tell your employer if you have any other paid work, taxable benefits or pension income. If the form is completed correctly, then for most people this should mean the correct tax code is used. Employers may also make adjustments to reflect Budget changes to some tax codes at the start of a tax year.
