What organizations help sea lions?
The Marine Mammal Center is the biggest advocate of the California sea lions. There are several fields for which to help including animal care, “stranding” and education, as well as administration, facilities and retail.
Can you play with sea lions?
Theater of the Sea’s Swim With the Sea Lion program is a unique way to experience these fun loving, intelligent, and fascinating animals. The interaction takes place in a natural salt water lagoon where participants do trained behaviors with a sea lion such as hoop jumps and hugs.

All seals and sea lions are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, and some are also listed under the Endangered Species Act. Together with our partners, we work to study, protect, and conserve these unique marine mammals and their habitats.
What are sea lions adaptations?
Thick, oily fur and a layer of blubber enables sea lions to retain a high body temperature in frigid waters. A special process called thermoregulation also allows sea lions to keep warm. Thermoregulation occurs because the blood vessels on a sea lion’s flipper are exposed as they are not covered by blubber or fur.
What animals interact with sea lions?
On land, sea lions will sleep in a variety of positions, often on top of their friends. California sea lions have been seen interacting with other species of pinnipeds, such as northern elephant seals, harbor seals, Northern fur seals, and Steller sea lions.
