The Gordy family, which owns the Atlanta-based fast food chain, has won permission from Athens-Clarke County to tear down the current restaurant for redevelopment. Athens-Clarke Commissioner Melissa Link froze the demolition plan, but lifted it on May 26.

Is the original varsity still open?
The latter location is scheduled for demolition in 2021. The Varsity location in Athens closed in June 2021, though the company hinted that it might return to Athens. The Alpharetta location closed on February 1, 2016, and the building has since been demolished.
