Alternative Family Living (AFL) is an innovative model of providing care and support to adults with intellectual disabilities who need help with day-to-day activities and whose support needs can be provided by an individual or family in a natural home setting.

An AFL provider is an individual or couple who chooses to provide Residential Supports in their home. The AFL site must be the primary residence of the AFL provider. An AFL can be licensed or unlicensed depending on the number of consumers receiving services in the AFL home and the age of the consumer.
What is a AFL home?
The Adult Family Living (AFL) Program provides personal care and supportive services (homemaker, chore, attendant services, meal preparation) to older adults who reside in a private home with a principal caregiver who also lives in the home.

Many people with special needs choose to live in supportive group homes with several other people with special needs. Depending on the program, these homes could be staffed with counselors and other workers who help the residents live on their own, or, in some cases, the residents live without live-in assistance.
