Is Social Security automatically notified of a death?
We should be notified as soon as possible when a person dies. However, you cannot report a death or apply for survivors benefits online. In most cases, the funeral home will report the person’s death to us.
What happens if you do not report changes to SSI?
You may be underpaid and not receive the benefits due to you, as quickly as you otherwise could, if you do not report changes on time. We may overpay you and you may have to pay us back.
How does in-kind support and maintenance affect SSI?
In-kind support and maintenance is food or shelter that somebody else provides for you. We count in-kind support and maintenance as income when we figure the amount of your SSI benefits. For example, if someone helps pay for your rent, mortgage, food, or utilities, we reduce the amount of your SSI benefits.
When do you have to report your SSI payments?
Beginning on page 14, you’ll see examples of how your earnings affect your SSI payments. When your other income goes up, your SSI payments usually go down. If you receive SSI, you must tell us right away when you start working, and you must report your earnings each month. This will help us avoid overpayments and underpayments.
When do you have to report a social security change?
You must report any changes that may affect your benefits immediately, and no later than 10 days after the end of the month in which the change occurred. Changes you need to report range from a change of address to traveling outside the United States for 30 consecutive days.
