The bathtub / hand-washing method
- Turn the jeans inside out.
- Fill the sink/bathtub up with room temperature water.
- Add Woolite Dark detergent (or similar) and white vintage and mix in well.
- Place the jeans in the water and agitate them for a minute or so.
- Let them soak for an hour, agitating every once in a while.
Should you wash raw denim before wearing?
Breaking Raw. Prior to wearing your new jeans for the first time, you need to soak them. Soaking will remove starch and chemicals, making the fabric softer and help it last longer. (Make sure you know if your raw denim is sanforized or unsanforized. If sanforized or “one-wash” you won’t need to soak them.)
How long should you wait to wash raw denim?
To achieve the best fit possible, we highly recommend you wear your jeans for at least 3 to 6 months before washing them. However, if you feel compelled to wash them earlier then we recommend at a minimum a full week of consistent wear.
What happens if you machine wash raw denim?
Washing machines tumble, spin, and agitate, which could not only remove those creases but also add a few of their own. If you do choose to wash with a machine though, DO NOT PUT THEM IN THE DRYER. The dryer will shrivel your jeans into a raw denim raisin with a host of weird new creases.
Will raw denim still fade after washing?
Each time you wash your raw denim, you’ll be losing some of the indigo. So yes, each wash will fade your denim. However, the indigo loss will be uniform. If you want vintage fades (that more uniform washed out denim look), washing frequently is how you’ll get there.
When should you first wash jeans?
The answer is YES, with the exception of raw denim. Washing jeans before wearing them the first time helps to prevent dyes from bleeding onto your skin and other clothes. We advise washing jeans as seldom as possible to maintain fit, shape and color.

Freeze your denim. Freezing your denim between wears may help freshen it and reduce odors. Place your raw denim in the freezer for a few hours, or leave it overnight. Remove the denim a few hours before you plan to wear it.

Does raw denim shrink when washed?
Raw denim will shrink after the first wash due to the reaction of the yarns contacting water for the first time after dying. For the same reason they also stretch more easily than yarns that have incurred shrinkage from contact with water.
Why do you not wash raw denim?
The point of not washing them for as long as possible is to avoid breaking down the fibres of the denim, to preserve the deep indigos and the stiff (you might say, uncomfortable) feel of the fabric that makes them so appealing to start with.

Selvedge denim is expensive because the weave is tighter and denser – and the production process itself is more labor intensive, on more delicate equipment. The main takeaway is when you buy selvedge denim, you are getting premium denim that is denser and less likely to fray.

How do I wash my jeans at home?
Run a cool-lukewarm bath and add your soap. We recommend our Denim Wash, but most soaps and detergents will do. Wait for the soap to be completely dissolved in the water and place your jeans in the tub. Turn off the water when there’s enough for the jeans to be completely submerged (around 3-4 inches).
Should I Hem my jeans before or after washing?
If you hem your jeans before the first wash, please keep this in mind or you might have the snazziest pair of denim flood pants around. Temperature – The warmer the water, the more indigo you will lose and the more the denim will shrink. This is true for any sort of wash.
How often should I wash my jeans to prevent fading?
Developing bright, well-worn fade patterns in a raw denim (head to the denim encyclopedia if you’re not sure what that is) while keeping them clean is a balancing act. Wash them too often and the fades will be halted, but wait too long and you may not feel or smell so fresh.
