The measurements and information you need to determine spoke length are:
- The number of spoke holes in the hub and rim.
- The effective rim diameter, called the “ERD”
- Hub flange diameter at the spoke holes, also known as the Spoke Pitch Diameter.
- Left and right hub flange spacing relative to the hub center.
What is spoke hole?
The number of holes that are found in a rim or hub dictate how many spokes will be used to construct the wheel. The spoke hole count on the rim and hub need to be identical in order to build a wheel properly.
Are all spokes the same size?
You may need as many as three different spoke lengths. One length for the front wheel, one for the rear drive side, and one for the rear non-drive side.
What diameter is a 14G spoke?

What are the strongest bicycle spokes?
Berd PolyLight Spokes: A Significant Change to Bike Wheels UHMWP is the strongest material on the planet on a per-weight basis. Its popularity stems from its extremely light weight and famous resistance to abrasion, impact, corrosion, and UV damage.
How much do spokes cost?
Spokes are usually $1.00 – $2.00 each. Any shop will sell individual spokes. Labor to replace a spoke is $10 – $20 depending on your location.
Which is better spoke or alloy?
Spoke wheels are sturdier than alloy wheels and hence are used mainly in adventure and off-road motorbikes. These wheels are extremely flexible, thereby providing enough room to jump with ease from building heights while retaining the grip and hold over the bike as well as the rider, both at the same time.
How accurate is spoke length?
In essence, you will want to be pretty precise. 2mm too long might just be ok, 2mm short might be too short. Be sure to measure the ERD yourself (!) and as precise as you are able to. The spokes on my last build had 10mm thread, and the nipples, despite being 12mm long, only had 7mm thread.
What is a 14g spoke?
Spoke sizes Spoke Gauge Diameter and millimetre size. 15g = 1.8mm. 14g = 2.0mm.
What size are MTB spokes?
A majority of mountain bike wheels use either 24, 28, or 32 spokes per wheel depending on their intended use.
