Can you receive SBP and DIC at the same time?
Answer: In general, an individual cannot receive both SBP and DIC concurrently. When the Defense Finance and Accounting Services (DFAS) is informed that an individual is eligible to receive DIC from VA, DFAS will deduct the amount of DIC received from the SBP annuity. This is commonly known as the SBP/DIC offset.
What is the difference between DIC and SBP?
SBP allows a military retiree or retirement-eligible service member to ensure a continuous lifetime annuity for their dependents. However, a VA benefit called the Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) offsets the money a widow would receive from SBP, dollar-for-dollar.

Does DIC affect Social Security?

Can a survivor receive both DIC and SBP?
Under current law, a survivor may not receive the full amount of both SBP and DIC. In order to receive DIC, the survivor must waive the same amount of SBP.
